Crypto Leverage Calculator: Margin, Liquidation & ROE

Free, no signup, runs in your browser: this calculator turns entry price, leverage and margin into liquidation price, fees, PnL and ROE for longs and shorts. A $10,000 BTC position at 20x needs $500 of initial margin (10,000 ÷ 20), plus about $10 in round-trip fees at 0.05% per side.

On that example (BTC at $81,000, generic isolated model) a 20x long breaks even at $81,081 after fees and liquidates near $77,355, 4.5% below entry. Notional is margin × leverage, ROE is net PnL ÷ margin, and an isolated long liquidates near entry × (1 − 1/L + MMR), so every extra turn of leverage thins your cushion.

Model isolated-margin perpetuals with a venue preset or the generic exchange model (maintenance margin). The LeverUp preset uses venue caps and a margin-loss rule; the Bybit (BTC, ETH and SOL) and Hyperliquid presets use published maintenance-margin tiers. Enter your own entry price — numbers are not live quotes unless labelled as examples.

The calculator opens in US regulated mode, capped at an illustrative 5x ceiling for eligible US traders. An offshore high-leverage view is available for non-US readers only, behind a short disclaimer; see US regulated crypto perps compared for the venue details.

Risk: leverage multiplies losses as well as gains. At 20x a 5% move against you removes your whole margin, and a fast wick, fees or funding can liquidate you before your stop. Only trade money you can afford to lose completely; none of these numbers is advice.

Estimates only. Not investment advice. Real liquidation depends on venue rules, maintenance margin, mark price, fees and funding. Leveraged products can lose more than expected, and positions can be closed quickly. Maintenance margin is a generic placeholder (0.5% on the auto setting) that you can edit below the form.

Example: $10,000 BTC long at 20x, with fees

Margin = $10,000 ÷ 20 = $500. Opening and closing fees at 0.05% per side cost about $5 each way, so the position breaks even at 81,081.04, and generic isolated liquidation is near 77,355 (4.50% below entry).

ROE with trading fees: formula and worked example

Net ROE = (gross PnL − open fee − close fee) ÷ margin. Gross PnL is quantity × (exit − entry) for a long and quantity × (entry − exit) for a short. The taker fee is charged on notional on both sides: open fee = entry notional × fee rate, close fee = quantity × exit price × fee rate. Margin = entry notional ÷ leverage, so per unit of margin: ROE = leverage × (price move in your favour % − open fee % − close fee % × exit ÷ entry).

Example: short ETH at 5x, 0.05% taker fee on open and close

  1. Notional: $1,000 margin × 5 = $5,000 at an entry of $3,000, so quantity = 5,000 ÷ 3,000 = 1.6667 ETH.
  2. Gross PnL (short, exit $2,850): 1.6667 × (3,000 − 2,850) = $250.00, which is 25.00% ROE before fees.
  3. Fees: open $5,000 × 0.05% = $2.50; close 1.6667 × 2,850 = $4,750 × 0.05% = $2.375; total $4.875.
  4. Net PnL: 250 − 4.875 = $245.125 (about $245.13).
  5. Net ROE: 245.125 ÷ 1,000 = 24.51%. Check: 5 × (5% − 0.05% − 0.05% × 0.95) = 5 × 4.9025% = 24.5125%.

A round trip costs roughly 2 × fee × leverage in ROE, here about 0.49 percentage points. The same prices as a long (buy $3,000, sell $2,850) give −$250 gross, −$254.875 net and −25.49% ROE: side flips the sign of the price move, but fees are always subtracted. This short breaks even at 3,000 × (1 − 0.0005) ÷ (1 + 0.0005) ≈ $2,997.00. Funding is excluded; add it with the optional funding input. Maker fees use the same formula at the lower rate. To reproduce it above: Short, entry 3000, leverage 5, margin 1000, exit 2850, fee 0.05, funding 0.

FAQ

What is the best free crypto leverage calculator?

A good one is free, needs no signup, shows its formulas and handles both long and short. This calculator is free with no signup, runs in your browser, and covers fees, funding, maintenance margin and venue leverage caps. For one job at a time, use the liquidation price calculator, position size calculator, crypto profit calculator or Hyperliquid calculator. Formulas and data dates are on the methodology page.

How much margin do I need to open a $10,000 BTC position at 20x leverage?

$500 of initial margin: margin = position size ÷ leverage = 10,000 ÷ 20. At 10x it is $1,000 and at 50x it is $200. Opening and closing at 0.05% per side adds about $10 in fees, and on the generic isolated model a long from $81,000 would liquidate near $77,355. Example prices are as of 2026-10-23, not live quotes.

How do I calculate ROE with trading fees on both sides?

Net ROE = (gross PnL − open fee − close fee) ÷ margin. The taker fee is charged on notional at both ends: open fee = entry notional × fee, close fee = quantity × exit price × fee. Equivalently, ROE = leverage × (price move in your favour % − open fee % − close fee % × exit ÷ entry). Long vs short only flips the sign of the price move; fees always reduce ROE, and funding is calculated separately. Worked example.

What is the margin ROE of a 5x ETH short with taker fees on open and close?

Short ETH at 5x with $1,000 margin, entry $3,000, exit $2,850 and 0.05% taker each side: notional $5,000, quantity 1.6667 ETH, gross PnL $250, fees $2.50 + $2.375 = $4.875, net PnL $245.125, so ROE = 24.51% on margin (25% before fees). Funding is excluded.

How much is $100 with 10x leverage?

$100 margin controls a $1,000 position, so a 1% move is about ±$10. Worked tables are in What is 10x leverage?

What is 20x leverage on $10?

A $200 position, with each 1% move worth about ±$2. See 20x and the rest of the 2x to 50x range in What is 10x leverage?

How risky is 100x leverage or more?

Very: at 100x a move of about 1% erases your margin, and above that the cushion keeps shrinking. What 100x and 1000x actually mean is covered in What is 1000x leverage? on 1000xleverage.com.

How much leverage should I use in crypto?

Risk 1–2% of account per trade via stop distance; leverage = notional ÷ margin. Try the position size calculator.
